Why do butterflies start out as caterpillars
Butterflies actually start out as eggs, then hatch into caterpillars.
Adult butterflies have a mouth that is like a straw, which is for sipping nectar from flowers. But nectar from flowers is a sweet liquid that mostly good for supplying energy, it does not have the nutrients that a butterfly needs to grow.
Caterpillars, on the other hand, have jaws that r like pruning shears. They r basically plant eating machines. They consume enough food to grow to adult size.
